Airline baggage

Air Canada cabin baggage allowance

· ~3 min read · Verified against Air Canada — carry-on baggage (official)

Air Canada, like BA, publishes no carry-on weight limit: your bag must fit the sizer and you must be able to stow it unassisted. The size rules are strictly enforced with automated sizers at security and gates.

The short answer

1 standard item up to 23 x 40 x 55 cm + 1 personal item up to 33 x 43 x 16 cm (wheels and handles included). No weight limit — you must lift it into the bin yourself. Economy Basic fares on some routes include only the personal item.

Dimensions always include wheels and handles unless the airline says otherwise.

Personal item policy

The personal item must fit under the seat: a purse, laptop bag or small backpack within 33 x 43 x 16 cm. On Economy Basic fares this is the only item included on some itineraries — international connections keep the full 1 + 1.

Do status or loyalty tiers change the allowance?

Star Alliance Gold customers travelling on Star itineraries with two or more member carriers are entitled to two carry-on pieces. Otherwise status does not change the cabin allowance.

Checked baggage: how it works

Checked allowance is piece-based by route, cabin and fare. Air Canada's pages carry current tables and prepaid options.

If your bag is too big or too heavy

Air Canada uses automated sizers before security and at gates; oversize items are gate-checked and charged. Check the wheels-in measurement at home — dimensions include wheels and handles.

Weigh before you wing it

Most carriers here enforce a 7–10 kg cabin limit. A luggage scale costs less than one gate fee and ends the guesswork.
