Air New Zealand cabin baggage allowance

· ~3 min read · Verified against Air New Zealand — baggage (official)

Air New Zealand measures the carry-on as 55 x 40 x 23 cm with total linear dimensions up to 118 cm, and gives Economy one 7 kg bag while premium cabins and top-tier members get two bags totalling 14 kg.

The short answer

Economy: 1 carry-on up to 7 kg (55 x 40 x 23 cm, max 118 cm linear) + 1 personal item. Premium Economy / Business Premier (and Koru / Star Alliance Gold): 2 carry-ons, 14 kg combined, no bag over 10 kg.

Personal item policy

The personal item rides on top of the carry-on allowance: a handbag, thin laptop, small camera, tablet or e-reader, duty-free goods, or an overcoat, as long as it fits under the seat.

Do status or loyalty tiers change the allowance?

Yes: Koru Gold, Koru Platinum, Koru Black and Star Alliance Gold members get the two-bag 14 kg allowance even in Economy.

Checked baggage: how it works

Checked bags are piece-based: up to 23 kg and 158 cm linear per bag, with allowance by fare; extra bags are cheapest pre-purchased. Oversize/overweight options and fees are on Air New Zealand's pages.

If your bag is too big or too heavy

On Q300 regional aircraft the depth limit tightens to 22 cm — a hard-sided roller often fails there. Oversize carry-on is checked at airport rates.

Weigh before you wing it

Most carriers here enforce a 7–10 kg cabin limit. A luggage scale costs less than one gate fee and ends the guesswork.
